What Is Straightness Training for Horses?
Straightness Training is the process of helping the horse find balance, symmetry and softness in its body.
Every horse is naturally crooked. This is normal — but it affects:
- balance
- rhythm
- soundness
- willingness
- emotional relaxation
Straightness Training brings the horse back into functional alignment.
Why Horses Are Naturally Crooked
Horses have:
- a dominant side
- uneven muscle development
- natural asymmetry in the ribcage
- a preference for bending one way
This creates imbalance in movement.
The Goal of Straightness Training
Not to “straighten” the horse like a ruler. But to help the horse:
- carry weight evenly
- release tension
- find balance
- move with softness
- develop healthy biomechanics
Softness Before Straightness
A crooked horse cannot straighten under tension. Softness is the first step.
When the horse relaxes:
- the spine becomes available
- the hind legs can step under
- the ribcage can move
- the balance can shift
The Rider’s Role
The rider influences straightness through:
- pelvis alignment
- breath
- weight distribution
- timing
- clarity
Straightness Training is a partnership, not a correction.
